2011 Local outing to Drogheda and the Boyne Valley

The summer outing in early june 2011 was to the Millmount Museum in Drogheda in Co. Louth. Formally a military barracks, the buildings now accomodate an excellent local museum and visitor centre. Drogheda was one of the most important towns in the English Pale - it even has a connection with our area in the person of Sir Francis Roe, first Govenor of Mountjoy Fort, who later became Mayor of Drogheda. From Millmount we travelled to the Battle of the Boyne Centre where, having viewed the permanent exhibition, we watched displays of seventeenth-century equestrianism and musketry skills. An eventful day was rounded off by a pleasant meal in the seaside village of Annaglassan, Co. Louth, site of the earliest Viking landing in Irish history.
